The weekend is fast approaching and while everyone is still shaking off the holiday vibes from the festive season, it’s a good opportunity to simmer down with a trip to the movies, but what films should you have your eyes on?

Birdman

Birdman has already recieved massive praise in the US, and now the dark-comedy is hitting SA cinemas this weekend.

The film follows washed-up actor Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), who became famous for playing an iconic superhero in the movies, decides to stage a comeback in a Broadway play. Pressures mount leading up to the play’s opening night as Riggan battles his ego and tries to win back his family, at the same time re-establishing his career and finding himself in the process.

Seventh Son

If you’re looking for something a little more fantastical and action-packed, Seventh Son promises to bring the special effects and edge-of-your-seat fight scenes to kickstart your movie viewing into 2015.

Seventh Son tells the tale of Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), a knight who once imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance.Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world and Gregory has to come face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other.

Notable mention: Penguins of Madagascar

Penguins of Madagascar released in early December and may have been overlooked by some as everyone headed off for the holiday break, but you can’t afford to miss this animated spectacle.

It’s arguably the funniest movie of last year and features some hilarious writing, gorgeous visuals and interesting characters, as the movie follows the flippered espionage teame of Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, as they attempt to stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine from destroying the world as we know it.

    I’m keen to see Birdman. I see Keaton and Norton both got awards for it at the Venice Film Bienale.
