Following the craziness of Valentine’s Day weekend and everything that comes with it, a lot of you will want to just simmer down with a relaxed trip to the cinemas this weekend, and there’s a lot of choice on offer with some big releases launching this Friday, so here’s your handy guide on what you should be watching:

For the drama and music-lovers:

Whiplash

Whiplash is a film already attracting massive amounts of attention for all the right reasons. It stars the brilliant JK Simmons as a ruthless music instructor who pushes a young drummer Miles Teller (who we’ll see in Fantastic Four later this year) to the edge of his ability and sanity. It’s intense stuff.

For the war-drama aficionados:

American Sniper

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past couple months, you’ve heard about the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper and all the praise it’s getting. Well, it’s finally releasing in South Africa this Friday and stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, a legendary Navy SEAL sniper who was credited with a massive amount of kills, which also took it’s toll on his personal life.

For fans of true, and crazy, stories:

Big Eyes

Big Eyes stars Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in a biographical comedy/drama from Tim Burton about the true story of Walter Keane, who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s, who popularised portraits featuring big eyes. Keane’s art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret. The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions.

She becomes fascinated with Nina, another woman with chronic pain who recently committed suicide, and befriends Nina’s husband and child to help her rebuild.

For those into something a little more risqué:

Addicted
