While it may initially look like another spy spoof movie, there’s some valid reasons for us lads to head out and catch Melissa McCarthy’s new action comedy.

Spy movie

Spy, starring Mellissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law and Jason Statham, is basically The Kingsmen but for women, so why should us guys go watch it?

1. McCarthy

Like her or not Mellissa McCarthy is hilarious in Spy. For the few guys who struggled through Brides Maids and for the rest of us who couldn’t quite understand why she was in The Hangover part III, this movie will leave you in stitches. McCarthy plays a quite homely looking CIA agent, Susan Cooper, who has the arduous task of helping the super spy, Jude Law, be the hero everyone makes him out to be. Through circumstances out of her control she gets thrust into the field and the outcome is brilliant.

2. Action

The action sequences are pretty awesome. There are some great fist fights, shootouts and explosions – so it ticks all the boxes that an action movie has. Look, it’s not Transformers or The Expendables, so every scene isn’t an action sequence but it has got some great car chases and some pretty cringe worthy gadgets.

3. New take on the genre

It’s very oafish and a little bit goofy. What is successful about this movie is that it doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to Spy Movie 101. While it’s not the classy, sophisticated spy movie one would come to expect from the genre. It is so crass… but the not bad crass, it’s the hilarious crass. The whole cast is brilliant together and really play out of their boots. Byrne and big-screen new comer Miranda Hart (of BBC’s Miranda) are hilarious.

4. The Statham

Jason Statham. Statham is no new-comer when it comes to spy or action movies; he has a resume that is pretty much all action movies. In Spy he plays Rick Ford, the typical macho spy that one could only expect from Statham. Yet, somehow Statham out does himself. He takes macho to new heights and spy banter one-upmanship to a level that few could surpass.

5. Date night option

We owe it to the ladies. We’ve all made our girlfriend or wife sit through some shockers in the past. I think the list above shows that this movie isn’t a compromise; it’s a lot of fun. Look, it’s not going to win any Academy awards but it makes for a good date night.
