If you’re planning on hitting the movies this weekend, we’ve got you covered for what’s on. This weekend we’ve got an animated blockbuster, a psychological thriller, and a crime-comedy mash-up to keep you entertained.

Minions

Ever since Despicable Me introduced the mischievous yet clumsy yellow-skinned creatures known only as “minions”, the lovable little guys have developed into the franchise’s most popular asset and an instant cashcow in and of themselves. Minions releases this week and tells a story set decades before the eponymous characters started working for Steve Carell’s Gru, as they come under the employment of supervillain Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock).

Life of Crime

Jennifer Aniston, Isla Fisher and Will Forte star in this movie about two common criminals get more than they bargained for after kidnapping the wife of a corrupt real-estate developer who shows no interest in paying the $1 million dollar ransom for her safe return.

Lost River

In this neo-noir thriller directed by Hollywood star Ryan Gosling, a single mother of two (Christina Hendricks) descends into a dark underworld trying to save her childhood home and hold her family together, while her son sets off on a journey to uncover the secret behind the origins of their abandoned city, Lost River.

On paper Life of Crime looks good but it doesn’t really deliver.

Was lucky enough to see a pre-screening. It was hilarious – very different to Despicable Me’s humour, but still great. Very slack-stick and physical comedy, but some amazing moments.
