iPhone 6 Revealed, Plus Model Also Coming
Apple introduces its two new competitors into the future smartphone market – the thinnest iPhone model ever, as well as a new super-sized edition.
Apple has finally lifted the veil on its forthcoming iPhone iterations, revealing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plusmodel.
Revealed at Apple’s event in California, the unveiling of the two iPhone models ties up with earlier rumours that we’d see different iterations this time around from Apple.
iPhone 6
The iPhone 6 will feature a 4.7-inch screen – a fair-bit larger than the 4-inch found on the current iPhone 5S model, and is 6.9-millimeters thin, making it the thinnest phone Apple has ever created.
The design features rounded corners and curves, along with the front glass (which is “ion strengthened) bending around the sides of the phone, more closely resembling the design of the iPad Air and iPad Mini. The power button has also been moved from the top of the phone, such as on previous models, to the side.
Apple says the new screen has Retina HD resolution, with 1334 x 750 pixels providing 326 pixels per inch and a wider angle of view.
The iPhone 6’s A8 processor boasts 50 percent faster graphics and a 25 percent faster CPU that should make the phone more power efficient.
Apple says the iPhone 6 will offer 14 hours of talk time, a 40 percent increase over the iPhone 5S.
The iPhone 6 will also boast an 8MP rear-facing camera, digital image stabilization, and 1080p video recording at both 60 and 30 frames per second.
The iPhone 6 will come in three colors, gold, silver, and space grey, and will be available on 19 September in the US. It will start at $199 on-contract for a 16GB model, while 64GB and 128GB versions will be available for $299 and $399, respectively. Apple says the iPhone 6 will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.
iPhone 6 Plus
The super-sized iPhone 6 Plus model will include a 5.5-inch display, is 7.1mm thin and features an anodized aluminum back plate.
The larger phone touts new software too, as iOS 8 comes pre-installed on the device.
The screen resolution for the iPhone 6 Plus has been increased to 1920 x 1080 pixels, 185 percent more pixels compared to the 1136 x 640 resolution found on last year’s iPhone 5S.
iPhone 6 Plus will also allow apps to show more information than on smaller-sized iPhone screens. For example, in landscape mode, the Mail app will show both a list view of messages on the left side and the content of the selected message to the right, similar to how it is displayed on Apple’s iPad Air and iPad Mini.
The iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299 for a 16 GB model, $399 for a 64 GB model, and $499 for an all-new 128 GB model.
