Samsung has announced that its newest edition to its smartphone range, the Galaxy Alpha, has touched down in South Africa.

Running on Android 4.4 (KitKat), the smartphone is the first handset from the company that features an aluminium cover and octa core processor (two quad core processors).

“The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market”, said Craige Fleischer, Director of Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics SA.

The packs some serious power under the hood, with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of memory onboard and a 12 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The device has a 12cm (4.7 inch) display and around 7mm thick.

The Galaxy Alpha is set to retail for R8,779  on prepaid or R499 over 24 months on a contract from Vodacom.
