We’re a little into the new year and finally getting used to writing “2018” instead of “2017” on forms (although, we still bugger up the odd one); and there are a host of new games lining up for release this week! Let’s take a look at the most notable:

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Release date: 16 January 2018 (PS4 |PC)

Yeah, we know… Street Fighter V may have come out almost two years ago, but the beloved fighting game is getting a definitive Arcade Edition this month. The beefed-up version of the game includes codes for all of the DLC characters from seasons 1 and 2, as well as new interface graphics, two new gameplay modes (Arcade Mode and Extra Battle Mode), and one more V-Trigger per character. The game is both a free downloadable update for owners of the original game, and a standalone retail game sold at a reduced price.

Darkest Dungeon

Release date: 19 January 2018 (Switch)

Originally released last year and now making it’s way to the Switch, Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike, dungeon crawler video game created by indie game developer Red Hook Studios. The game has the player manage a roster of heroes to explore dungeons below a gothic mansion the player has inherited. Played out in a mix of real-time movement and turn-based combat, a core feature of Darkest Dungeon is the stress level of each hero that increases with further exploration and combat; a character sustaining a high stress level may gain afflictions that will hamper, or possibly enhance, their performance as an explorer.

Metal Gear Survive – Beta

Release date: 18-21 January 2018 (Xbox | PS4)

So, there’s a new Metal Gear releasing this year, but it’s not the tactical-espionage action you’re used to. This time around, Metal Gear Survive takes a horror-inspired turn with the introduction of zombies and an alternate timeline story. The open beta launches this week, giving gamers a chance to try out the spin-off with three missions and two maps will be available to demo, as will the game’s co-op mode. Any save progress will not be carried over in the main game, but participating in the beta will bag you some exclusive items when the game launches next month.
