Christmas is around the corner, and if you’re looking for a stellar gaming experience for a friend, loved one, or even yourself (because buying yourself gifts is totally acceptable this year), we’ve rounded up some of the best games that you should consider.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Available on: PS4

It’s been out for over a year now, so it’s likely that you’ll be able to pick up one of 2017’s best games (and one of the best PS4 titles to date) Horizon: Zero Dawn for a discounted price. Developed by Killzone studio Guerilla Games, this post-apocalyptic action-adventure is an exciting yet savage look at a world post-modern civilisationPlaying as heroine Aloy, the game relies heavily on its hunting, stealth and combat mechanics in order to survive the harsh environments and giant robotic beasts that look are basically Terminator dinosaurs.

Gears of War 4

Available on: Xbox One, PC

With Gears of War 5 arriving in 2019, it’s a good idea to tuck into one of the most solid third-person shooters this generation. Gears of War 4 reminds us exactly what made Gears so damn likeable in the first place. It doesn’t diverge too far away from the cover-shooter formula, but does introduce new gameplay twists thanks to some great environmental changes and snazzy guns that mix up the chainsawing carnage.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Available on: Xbox One | PS4

Look, it’s still brand-new, so you probably won’t get a great deal on it just yet, but if you need something meaty, high-quality, and dense enough to soak up a ton of hours in the holidays, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the horse you can back. It’s hard for anyone to deny how jam-packed with triple-A spiffiness Red Dead Redemption 2 is – from the spectacular scale of the fictitious American West, right down to the time-sinking side-quests, RDR 2 has an abundance of content and polish that’s made the eight year wait since the original well worth it.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Available on: Xbox One | PS4 | PC

The Wolfenstein franchise has a special place in gamer’s hearts — known as the no-frills, brutal shooter that strips away the BS and delivers a solid, blockbuster package; and we’re happy to report that The New Colossus is that Wolfenstein of old, and so much more. The New Colossus picks up after the events of 2014’s brilliant yet under-appreciated The New Order. It’s as every bit the challenging, over-indulgent Nazi-shooter you want it to be, but it’s also not as brash and blunt as it initially looks, providing a relatable, human story alongside its spray of bullets and blood. A must-play for first-person shooter fans.

The Evil Within 2

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

One of the most overlooked horror sequels this generation, The Evil Within 2 is a follow-up expands on the somewhat linear, survival-horror formula by throwing players into bigger environments and at trickier enemies, while refining the stiff controls from the first game. The story is a bit all over the place (as is with most of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s games), but it does manage to come together when things start wrapping up. For fans of Resident Evil 4, Dead Space or The Last of Us, this is a great addition to your nightmare fuel.
