We’ve had a cracking start to the 2023 gaming release schedule, and May is continuing that trend with a handful of games that’ll tickle just about any itch out there. From shooters to strategy adventures, here are our picks for the games releasing in May 2023:

Redfall

Release date: 2 May 2023 (Xbox Series X/S | PC)

Redfall

Coming from Arkane (who were behind the Dishonored, Deathloop, and Prey series), Redfall is an open-world co-op shooter revolving around vampire hunters in a small town in Massachusetts cut off from the rest of the world. Playing as a number of different hunters (each with their own abilities), you’ll have to master normal weaponry and supernatural powers to best the blood-suckers. Early reviews have been less-than-favourable, but we’d like to sink our teeth into it to find out more.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Release date: 12 May 2023 (Switch)

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to the Switch launch title, Breath of the Wild, and continues Link’s adventures in an open-world Hyrule, this time letting Link explore floating islands and soar high in the skies above the vast lands of Hyrule. Tears of the Kingdom has a tough job in trying to top its predecessor, and we can’t wait to see what Nintendo has done.

Lego 2K Drive

Release date: 19 May 2023 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | PS4 | Xbox One | Switch | PC)

You just know that there’s always a ton of innovation and creativity with any Lego game, and Lego 2K Drive is no different. Coming from Visual Concepts (the team behind the popular NBA 2K and WWE 2K series), Lego 2K Drive is a racing game, of sorts, with a spin whereby you can build your dream vehicle, get behind the wheel, and gear up for tons of open-world exploration and thrilling races. There’s even a story mode to indulge in, along with Cup Series tournaments and mini-games to discover and conquer.

Fans of the Amnesia series will know what they’re in for with any game in the franchise: creeping around dark environments, avoiding all supernatural creeps, and trying to find their way out of a bizarre situation. Amnesia: The Bunker provides all that and more, throwing players into a WWII setting where you awake in a mysterious war-torn bunker, where you’ll have to search for and use tools and weapons at your disposal, while keeping the lights on at all costs as you try to make it out alive.

System Shock

Release date: 30 May 2023 (PC)

System Shock is the fully fledged remake of the ground breaking original from 1994, combining cult gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and all-new sounds & music; it even has the original voice actor of SHODAN, one of gaming’s most iconic villains. With System Shock getting another go, newcomers can experience the game that inspired Bioshock and Prey.

Warhammer 40K: Boltgun

Release date: 23 May 2023 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | PS4 | Xbox One | Switch | PC)

There has been a bit of a resurgence of 90s-inspired shooters, and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun brings that run-‘n-gun franticness to the beloved Warhammer universe. You take control of a Space Marine to blast your way through an explosion of sprites, pixels and blood in a perfect blend of Warhammer 40K goodness, frenetic gameplay and the stylish visuals of retro shooters.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Release date: 25 May 2023 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | PS4 | Xbox One | PC)

We’ve seen a lot of Lord of the Rings game, but never have we had the opportunity to become Gollum. This stealth/action game allows you to play as that pesky ring-seeker on his quest to retrieve his Precious. You will need to climb the mountains of Mordor, sneak around Mirkwood and make difficult choices that change the course of the game.

Company of Heroes 3

Release date: 30 May 2023 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5)

The much-loved Company of Heroes threequel launched on PC earlier this year, and is now making its way to consoles this May. In Company of Heroes 3, the players take the role of Allied Forces during their invasion of Italy and Axis forces in the North African campaign. The strategy game has features new to the series such as the Tactical Pause system, which allows the player to pause a battle and queue up commands to be done after the game is resumed. On top of that, it also features a pretty deep destruction system that gives a lot of oomph to each combat encounter, as you’ll see walls and buildings collapse around your troops.
