An Underrated Batman Game is on Sale for Less than R200 this Week

The Batman Arkham games have an almost cult-like status at this point, delivering some of the best digital Caped Crusader experiences, with Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight being stellar titles, not to mention the often-overlooked Arkham Origins.

However, 2022’s Gotham Knights is another game set in a different Batman universe, but one which got slammed by critics. It’s definitely not without its faults, but is still well worth a play, especially with a great deal that’s on offer.

In a similar vein to the third-person action/stealth Arkham games, Gotham Knights sees Batman’s understudies taking the reins to stop Mr. Freeze and other villains from wreaking havoc on Gotham after Batman’s death. It’s got a lot more cooperative and RPG mechanics in it though, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on your taste.

Gotham Knights is an unusual game. On one hand, it feels like a natural successor to the brilliant Arkham games, giving you new characters, a gorgeously realised Gotham City to speed around in on the Batcycle, and some slick combat that packs a serious punch. However, it’s difficult to shake the feeling that this game was made with the intention of it being a multiplayer live-service release, only to be retro-fitted as a single-player game at the last minute, or visa-versa. There’s a lot of menu-tinkering, XP expenditure, and superfluous elements that detract from an otherwise great action game. On the plus side, the visuals and story are great, and the moment-to-moment combat is fun, with some interesting boss battles thrown into the mix.

Batman fans will want to check it out, but don’t expect a ‘Batman: Arkham 4‘, but rather an experimental spin-off, of sorts.
