Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids Review — A Worthwhile Expansion?

Should you take the trip to Ireland to continue your viking adventure?

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla has been quite the departure for Ubisoft’s stab-’em-up franchise, changing many of the game mechanics, tone, and structure the series has become known for. The Wrath of the Druids expansion marks a continuation of that epic adventure, which, while not breaking too much new ground, gives you a whole lot more quality AC goodness.

While Valhalla primarily took place on the English Isle, Wrath of the Druids expands Eivor’s adventure to Ireland, essentially presenting itself as a 10-12 hour long side-mission… with side-missions. After a quick boat trip from the game’s main open-world, you arrive on the island to uncover some political unrest, warring factions, and a supposedly supernatural threat. The new Irish landscape is gorgeous, and while not as big as the main English hub, it has its own unique look and feel, full of grassy hills and steep cliffs.

The cast of characters, armour sets, and enemies are all fresh too, which makes the whole experience feel almost like a new game, but the familiar mission types and gameplay remains mostly unchanged. The best bit however is a venture into some spooky territory, whereby you have to take on a group of enemies who use hallucinogenic fog to freak out their enemies into thinking they’re monsters. You obviously fall right into this trap, and in turn, have to fight some ‘supernatural’ enemies with special powers. It’s a lot of fun and does add a spicy twist to the enemies you’ve been hacking throughout the main game.

Though, instead of leaning in too hard into the supernatural elements, such as in previous expansions and DLC for past Assassin’s Creed games, Wrath of Druidsfits within the main game’s narrative quite seamlessly, but still feels like a bit of a new adventure, which is all you can ask of for a tie-in expansion at this point. It may not change the paradigm of the Valhalla formula, but it’s a worthwhile addition for anyone who can’t get enough of AC‘s viking adventure.
