Does the third Dragon Age adventure deliver the magic?

Dragon Age was always that series that I stayed away from for no reason whatsoever.  Something about it just didn’t grab me about the action-RPG franchise, but after playing the third entry into the series, Dragon Age: Inquisition, I’ve now got a new-found love and respect for the Dragon Age games.

This game is huge, and I mean that in every way possible. The scale of the world, skill trees, missions and enemies is incredibly impressive, so the 100+ hours that the game boasts is understandable once you experience its size.

Exploring, fighting, taking on quests, interacting with characters in the game and hunting dragons makes up the core of the gameplay. The combat is swift and refreshing and doesn’t feel restricted like other games in the genre. You really do have the freedom to approach situations and generate a fighting approach that fits your playing style. All these elements are brilliant, but there are a lot of other unassuming aspects that make the game shine.

There is a great item and crafting system which delivers so much satisfaction. It’s a little confusing at first, but there’s that “ah hah!” moment where you figure out how every piece fits together and you become obsessed with forging that ultimate weapon or armor.

If you want to embrace Dragon Age: Inquisition but feel you’ve been missing out as I did – don’t panic. Bioware made this super-handy website called the Dragon’s Keep that lets you watch an animated version of the entire backstory from the first two games. It even lets you make choices along the way and upload it to your new file for Inquisition.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is by far one of the most interesting and overwhelmingly impressive games I’ve played in a while, and that’s a great reaction to have when you’re not expecting it.
