Does a new coat of paint on Fable help it stand the test of time?

Due to the original Xbox never having an official launch in South Africa, many local gamers would not have had the chance to play the 2004’s Fable, but thanks to the remastered Fable Anniversary, action-RPG fans can tuck into acclaimed release.

The high-definition remake of the game doesn’t alter the winning formula at all, but instead just polishes up the visuals and smooths out the rough edges in its presentation.

The game has aged well since its initial 2004 release, and this is a testament to the game’s revolutionary (at the time) hybrid gameplay blend of action and RPG elements.

That said, Fable Anniversary still plays like a ten year old game, albeit with a new coat of paint.

The game itself tells the origin tale of The Hero of Oakvale, but the great draw to Fable is that the player decides the way the story plays out. Players can choose to take a righteous path, becoming a hero of the land, or an evil one, becoming the villain of the game. This non-linear ethos of the game is its strongest point, and gives the experience some serious replayability.

To progress through the game, players interact with people and objects to unlock quests that advance the game’s plot, leading you to fight mythical monsters, bandits and other jaw-dropping creatures.

A nice touch to the re-release is the inclusion of the Lost Chapters expansion, which adds some additional content and quests to the overall story.

Fable may be over a decade old, but it definitely hasn’t lost it’s charm, and is a must-play for any fan of the genre or anyone who’d love to invest their time in something truly immersive.
