You just know that there’s always a ton of innovation and creativity with any Lego game, and Lego 2K Drive is no different. Coming from Visual Concepts (the team behind the popular NBA 2K and WWE 2K series), Lego 2K Drive is a racing game, of sorts, with a twist, whereby you can build your dream vehicle, get behind the wheel, and gear up for tons of open-world exploration and thrilling races. To prepare you for all that Lego 2K Drive entails, we’ve rounded up the five things you need to know ahead of its 19 May release.

It’s racing, but a whole lot more

While Lego 2K Drive is an open-world racing game in the vein of something like Forza Horizon, there’s a whole lot more than just cruising around and finding races. In addition to mini-games, collectables, and areas to explore, there’s even a story mode to indulge in, along with Cup Series tournaments that you can compete in.

Giddy in the Garage

Of course, it’s a Lego game, so having the ability to click and clack bricks together is essential. Lego 2K Drive allows you to stretch your creative muscles and build some bizarre and brilliant vehicles. You have the power to customise every brick from nose to tail, and right from the get-go, you’ll have hundreds of bricks to build with, sorted by type and category via the easy-access Brick Drawer menu. To ensure that you don’t take up the whole road, there’s a build limit to how many bricks and added bits you can have on your ride — but rest assured that there’s a huge range of freedom to what you can create.

Bricks ‘n Power

Like Mario Kart or other racing games of the genre, there are some curveballs that can give you an edge during races. Power-Ups can be found along the tracks and using them wisely could be the make-or-break moment that launches you into first place; so plan accordingly.

Skills to pay the bills

Anyone who’s dived into a Lego game knows that they can be easily picked up, but deep enough to master. Lego 2K Drive extends this philosophy with accessible, arcade driving elements, with a few deeper mechanics thrown in. These include boosting tricks, doing stunts, and capitalising on the changing terrain, whether it be water, offroad areas, or the slick streets. This is where the Garage comes into play too, as all vehicles in Lego 2K Drive have their own stats, including Top Speed, Acceleration, Handling, Health, Melee Power, and Weight, and the more bricks you have in your vehicle, the heavier it gets, adding advantages and weaknesses.

Co-op glory days

Like Lego bringing back the childhood dreams of yesteryear, so does Lego 2K Drive return the couch-co-op antics of the 2000s. Lego 2K Drive features split-screen co-op (hallelujah), and the ability to play with friends and other Lego lovers online in a number of different game modes and tournaments.

Lego 2K Drive launches on 19 May 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. You can pre-order your copy here.
