If you’ve ever played a Lego game, you just know that there’s always a ton of innovation and creativity, and thankfully, Lego 2K Drive is no different. While it may not appeal to the hardcore racing fans eager for a realistic simulation, while also being a little too challenging for kids, Lego 2K Drive is one of the best genre-blending releases in recent years, falling somewhere between an adventure game and a racing experience.

From a racing perspective, Lego 2K Drive, while looking whacky and colourful (it really does look good in motion), is also as tight as any triple-A racing game. The arcade-inspired steering is responsive, the physics are solid, and you get a real tangible feeling, as if you’re really driving your blocky creation through a real Bricklandia. Being able to switch your vehicle on-the-fly from a street machine to a water-cruiser, and everything in between is incredibly satisfying too and adds an interesting twist as to how you prepare for race — want a more nimble vehicle for a water-heavy track and pure speed on the tar sections? You can design your vehicle configurations accordingly.

The garage is where you’ll be doing that too, which lets you click and clack bricks together as you see fit, edging you to build more and more outlandish vehicles to help you win trickier races and take on more ambitious challenges. There’s no doubt that the community creations in Lego 2K Drive are going to be a highlight for years to come.

And while Lego 2K Drive is an open-world racing game in the vein of something like Forza Horizon, there’s a whole lot more than just cruising around and finding races. In addition to mini-games, collectables, and areas to explore, there’s even a story mode to indulge in, which, admittedly, is incredibly funny and self-aware, poking fun at the tropes of movies and TV shows set in the world of racing. It has that now-trademark Lego stop-motion feel to it, and adds a lot of weight to the world you’re racing around in.

Furthermore, if delivering an already-enjoyable solo experience wasn’t enough, Lego 2K Drive brings back the childhood dreams of yesteryear with local split-screen co-op (hallelujah), which is a rare commodity in today’s gaming landscape.

For Visual Concepts (the team behind the popular NBA 2K and WWE 2K series) to develop a Lego racing game may have seemed like a bizarre choice, but the result is an incredibly entertaining, charming, and well-polished experience that everyone looking for some light-hearted fun should try out.

Lego 2K Drive is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
