Remedy, who pioneered the slow-motion bullet-time gunplay in the video game world with the original Max Payne games, has confirmed that the studio is teaming up with Rockstar to bring full remakes of the classic third-person shooters to life.

Remedy developed the first two titles in 2001 and 2003 respectively, with Rockstar publishing. Following this, Rockstar developed a third entry, Max Payne 3 (2012), itself. Remedy went on to make other time-bending shooters, such as Quantum Break, Control, and CrossfireX, but the studio returning to the titles that started it all is an interesting move.

According to Remedy’s announcement, it approached Rockstar with the idea of remaking the games, and Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser was “thrilled” by the idea. Rockstar is funding the development of the remakes, whose budget will be “in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production,” says Remedy.

Not too many other specifics of the games are known as of yet, although they will be released as a double-package, with both games compiled into one release. Furthermore, Remedy plans to use its Northlight game engine, which was most recently seen in Control.

Remedy is also currently working on Alan Wake 2, so the release of the Max Payne and Max Payne 2 remake could be some time away; although this will likely be worth the wait.
