New Prince of Persia, Spider-Man 2 Release Date, & Everything You Missed from Summer Game Fest
Check out the biggest announcements and reveals from the 2023 Summer Game Fest event.
With the absence of the E3 gaming expo, which used to provide a lot of big game announcements and reveals, we’re left to expect some exciting things from the Summer Game Fest and other gaming shows, and thankfully, this year’s edition didn’t disappoint.
Geoff Keighley, the Summer Game Fest took place on 8 June, and delivered some pretty notable announcements and reveals. We’ve rounded up the best of the best, below:
Spider-Man 2 Release Date
Insomniac Games announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on Friday, 20 October 2023, only on PS5. As you saw in the PlayStation Showcase last month – the main storyline of the game will have you take control of both Spider-Men at different points of the campaign. In the open world, you will be able to switch nearly instantly between them as you explore Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Both Spider-Men have stories and missions in the world exclusive to each of them.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
While we’re still awaiting news on the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, Ubisoft, surprisingly, announced a new Prince of Persia game called Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. More of a 2.5D Metroidvania-inspired adventure, The Lost Crown sees you play as a new character, Sargon, as you fight, platform, and puzzle your way through mythological Persia. It arrives on 18 January 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando
John Carpenter (you know, that guy behind The Thing) is working on a new video game called Toxic Commando from Focus Interactive and Sabre (who developed the fantastic World War Z). The game throws you and some friends against hordes of mutated monsters in the midst of a supernatural outbreak. Toxic Commando is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Alan Wake 2 Gameplay
We saw some snippets of Alan Wake 2 last month, but we finally got an unedited gameplay trailer, showcasing some combat and some more of the sequel’s new character, Saga. Alan Wake 2 will be released for PS5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on 17 October 2023.
Mortal Kombat 1 Gameplay
The highly-anticipated reboot/redirection of the Mortal Kombat universe, Mortal Kombat 1, got a brand-new gameplay trailer, which showcased the veteran fighter’s latest instalment in action, and it’s looking really good (and as bloody as ever).
Sonic Superstars
A brand-new Sonic game was announced by Sega, and instead of a full 3D adventure like that of Sonic Frontiers, it’s a 2.5D throwback to the Sonic the Hedgehog games of yesteryear. Players can even take on the game co-op, playing as one of the other beloved Sonic characters.
Final Fantasy Rebirth Trailer
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth continues the story of 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It picks up after the first game where Cloud Strife and his friends have escaped the dystopian city of Midgar and embark on a new journey across the wide world of Gaia to pursue the vengeful swordsman, Sephiroth. The Summer Game Fest delivered a new trailer showing some gameplay from the follow-up.
