Playstation Classic gives nostalgic Playstation value in a bite-size bundle.

Retro gaming seems to be making a bit of a comeback, and Sony has clearly spotted an opportunity to get in on the action with the announcement of their Playstation Classic mini-console.

It bears a striking resemblance to the first Playstation console, but it’s a miniaturised version that comes with HDMI functionality and two controllers that are effectively exact copies of the originals. So, the real question: what games are confirmed for this return to classic Sony gaming?

Well, there’s some good news and some bad news on that front. The good news: it will come with a list of twenty pre-installed games on the console. 20 games is a decent amount, and they’ve got a good list of classic games to draw from. The bad news: it will have no internet, PSN, or additional support – meaning that if a game isn’t on the list of 20 pre-installed games, it’s just not going to be available on this console.

The list of games hasn’t been entirely confirmed, but we have a list of five titles that Sony has already released:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Wild Arms
  • Jumping Flash
  • Tekken 3

One of the best RPG games in FFVII makes an appearance, and so does one of the best fighting games in Tekken 3. The rest of the list will be confirmed as we approach its 3 December release date this year, and a lot of the hype and sales will likely hinge on the remaining 15 games.

Our take:

A potential problem for Sony is that there are probably more than 20 ‘classic’ games – and many players might buy the console just to have access to one or two of their favourite, nostalgic titles from that era. The lack of internet connectivity for them to release additional games on may also be a slight oversight – since it would’ve incentivised people to buy the console in case more of their favourites were released in future.

That being said, for its predicted $100 (around R1,450) price it will still be an easy and accessible way to enjoy some classic Playstation games – and although they didn’t go as far as they could’ve with the library it’s still a cool throwback to past titles.

What games would you need to see on the list of 20 before you would consider buying this? Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid are high on our wishlist – let us know yours!
