Resident Evil 7: New Weapon and Story Details Emerge
What the heck is going on in Resident Evil 7?

Since its announcement back at E3 2016, not much has been said by Capcom of what exactly Resident Evil 7 is. We know it’s a VR-compatible first-person horror game, and have seen a few gameplay pieces, but that’s about it. Does it tie into the pre-existing Resident Evil world? Do you ever get to use any weapons? And are there even zombies?
The gameplay videos up until now haven’t suggested so, but the game’s ESRB rating has just appeared on the interwebz and provided us with some insight into the game – and it looks like Capcom have been playing their cards close to their chest.
According to the description, players will get to use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws “to kill mutant creatures”, with the ESRB going into detail on some of the gory sequences depicted during the game’s cutscenes.
“As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence,” it says. “A character’s arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man’s leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera.”
Combat is accompanied by “realistic gunfire”, the description adds, along with “screams of pain” and “exaggerated blood-splatter effects”.
Looks like we’ll be getting a much more Resident Evil-ish game than we initially thought, albeit from a new perspective.
In addition to the new information provided by the ESRB rating, Capcom showcased some of its tech featured in the next RE instalment, including photogrammetry, a practice in which people and objects are photographed from several angles then reproduced digitally as a 3D model. A few images were taken during the Capcom’s presentation at game developer conference CEDEC.
Resident Evil 7 will arrive on PS4, Xbox One and PC in January 2017.
