Microsoft dropped a bomb at its Gamescom 2014 conference this week, announcing that Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, will be an Xbox One exclusive.

There weren’t too many other details about the exclusivity, however, it’s speculated that it will be a timed and limited deal, with the game inevitably set to make it to Playstation 4 and PC, most likely. The game has also been confirmed for Xbox 360.

The news has prompted a fierce reaction from fans, many of whom have already pre-ordered the game on other platforms. Writing via the Crystal Dynamics Tumblr, Gallagher has sought to reassure the Tomb Raider community:

“Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past – we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will pick up after the events of the first game, where Lara Croft has to come to terms with her new discoveries and continues to delve deeper into the dark and mysterious ancient world around here. Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider.
