Spider-Man Remastered PC Review — Simply Showing Off
We review Spidey’s leap to PC.
The question of whether or not Marvel’s Spider-Man is a good game or not is irrelevant at this point. Insomniac’s 2018 breakout hit was (and is) the best video game adaptation the wallcrawler has seen in his lifetime, capturing the dual-life dichotomy of Marvel’s iconic superhero, featuring ultra-slick webslinging, traversal, and combat, not to mention a stellar story full of Spidey’s best villains. However, is it worth replaying on PC?
For PC owners who missed out on the PS4 exclusive, it’s a no-brainer, but there are some things to consider. Firstly, Spider-Man Remastered does ask a fair bit of PC specs, but thankfully, it is optimised well to be in reach of just about anyone with a decent rig. However, if you want to run the game with Ultimate Ray Tracing at 4K 60fps, you will least need an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX6950 XT.
Thankfully, with regards to its minimum spec requirements, Spider-man Remastered will run fine on a system with a 4th-gen Intel i3 processor, an Nvidia GTX 950 GPU and 8GB RAM with 75GB HDD storage, albeit at 720p 30fps. While it certainly won’t be the best experience, the fact that the game is playable on older hardware is great.
What’s also worth noting is that this is essentially the third ‘version’ of Spider-Man, after the game was already beefed-up for the PS5 version; which, following that release, has now received some even more enhancements for PC.
While we’re not entirely sure why Insomniac made the change, you get a completely new face model (which did appear on the PS5 version) to Peter Parker, making him look a lot more like his big-screen counterpart, Tom Holland. With that said, there is a refined nature to the PC graphics, allowing the already-impressive facial animations and subtle gestures to really shine on the PC platform.
As for the more technical add-ons, the game features DLAA and DLSS support, which essentially harnesses the latest tech in Nvidia and AMDs cards to deliver a seamless and high-quality experience without having to drop frame-rates. You also have the ability to switch from performance and fidelity mode, but the real gamechanger in this PC version is the ray-tracing improvements, especially when it comes to reflections and lighting.
With RTX on, any metal, glass, or water surface in the game reflects a highly-detailed mirror image to the player, giving you a really immersive and true to life experience that enhances every fight, wall-climbing moment, and boss fight. Reflections off of cars look particularly impressive, and only add to the gloriously-lit and meticulously-detailed cityscape of New York.
Ultra-wide monitor support is also present, allowing those lucky enough with colossal screens to get an expanded view of the action, which really does come in handy given Spider-Man is full of large room and environment encounters where spatial awareness is key. It really does help showcase the vast city during traversal segments too.
Spider-man‘s arrival on PC also allows you to play with Sony’s PS5 controller, the DualSense, which is not only a recommendation but borderlines a necessity. This is simply because the haptic feedback that the controller provides is just so damn good, giving you a really tangible feeling when swinging around the city by adding in resistance and environmental effects such as wind vibrations, along with its implementation with Spider-Man’s Spidey Sense.
With the spiffier graphics, streamlined presentation, and customisation options, this really is the definitive version of Spider-Man, and one which every fan or open-world-loving gamer should check out.
