TopSpin 2K25 Preview: A Grand Slam Tennis Hit?

It may have been a 13-year wait since the last entry into 2K’s beloved tennis franchise, but TopSpin 2K25 is upon us, releasing on 26 April 2024 (you can get your pre-orders in too). However, before you jump straight onto the virtual court, here are 5 things you need to know about the incoming tennis sim.

New developer

Interestingly, TopSpin 2K25 is developed by Hangar 13, the studio behind the brilliant yet incredibly underappreciated Mafia 3 (honestly, it’s one of our favourite games). So, it should be an interesting spin on the genre to see a studio more akin to action games taking on a sports simulation.

It’s a Major Thing

TopSpin 2K25 will feature a host of the key major tournaments to participate in (and hopefully win). You can make your way through the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, US Open, and Wimbledon, and adapt to master the most famous of clay grass, and courts in the world. Each iconic venue has also been meticulously recreated to capture the crowd and atmosphere of the real-world setting.

Star-studded

What’s any triple-A sports sim without the big names and likenesses? You can play as Carlos Alcaraz, Roger Federer, Iga Swiatek, Frances Tiafoe, and Serena Williams, among other modern pros, along with classic stars such as Andre Agassi, Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff, Steffi Graf, Daniil Medvedev, and John McEnroe.

Your own journey

Of course, you can create your very own future tennis star in the MyPlayer mode and join the tennis circuit as an unknown player, then climb the ranks of the Tour in hopes of being crowned a champion in MyCareer mode. Pick up sponsorships from the biggest brands in the industry (Adidas, Nike, Fila, Head, Hugo Boss, and Wilson, to name a few), visit exotic destinations, perfect your training regimen, and go head-to-head with the sport’s biggest stars to craft your own tennis saga.

Challenge the World

TopSpin 2K25 features a pretty comprehensive multiplayer component, with a suite of modes available, all of which include day-one cross-play support for various platforms. Put your created player’s abilities to the test on the World Tour, where you can battle other unique player-created stars for bragging rights, or select a pro and see if you can beat the competition on the 2K Tour. You can also compete in daily, weekly, and monthly challenges to earn rewards, while you compete in ranked and unranked matches.

Of course, TopSpin 2K25 will be the best-looking tennis game to date, full of new animations, photorealistic likenesses, and slick and easy-to-learn gameplay to boot.
