For those who have a sweet-tooth, a brand-new liqueur is hitting the South African market, and one which is offering something pretty unique.

Cake comes from distillers Pienaar & Son, who have taken a dessert liqueur concept to the next level, by using actual dessert offcuts to help create the new drink.

The liqueur uses the cake offcuts from neighbouring bakery Sweet Lion Heart, which are then blended with Pienaar & Son’s award-winning vodka, along with some water, to create a cream liqueur.

“The idea was born out of a genuine desire to minimise waste and to implement the notion of ‘using what we have got’ here at Pienaar & Son,” said the brand.

Nikki Symons, owner of Sweet Lion Heart added that “baking cake always leads to some scrumptious cut-offs here and there… but if you’re baking as much as we do, these tasty little morsels start to pile up! Over the years here at Sweet Lion Heart, we’ve always looked for innovative ways to use our cake wastage, but never did we dream that they’d end up in a bottle mixed with the finest P&S vodka. We couldn’t think of a smarter, sweeter way to put our delicious cake off-cuts to good use.”

Cake is available in 250ml bottles (R160 each), in either vanilla or chocolate flavour, with a pack of 4 (R590) also available. You can purchase Cake from Pienaar & Son’s website.
