Having enough space to expand housing space isn’t really a problem regarding the vast South African landscape, but across Europe, it’s a prevalent issue. As the expression goes: ‘Land is the one thing they’re not making more of’.

Luckily, there are a few clever people working on innovative solutions to this issue; and Jag Virdie, a former Rolls-Royce engineer, has designed the ‘Conker’ Living Pods to offer a housing solution that maximises space utilisation in shrinking urban and suburban areas. The name comes from a popular kids game in the UK played with chestnuts called ‘Conkers’, which the pods bare a striking resemblance to.

The wooden orbs have a spherical, but surprisingly spacious interior, just enough for a single person that needs all their necessities in one tidy, little space. They’re designed for the so-called ‘Boomerang Generation’ that often returns home after university or their studies.

As the global population continues to grow innovative accommodation and housing solutions will become the norm. In space-strapped nations like Japan, they’re already commonplace, and it looks like that trend is set to continue.
