How to Make Bitcoin Payments at Pick n Pay

Pick n Pay now accepts Bitcoin, but how do you go about making these new-fandangled payments?

South African retailer Pick n Pay recently announced that the retail chain will be accepting Bitcoin payments for groceries across a number of their stores nationwide; but while that’s great news for Bitcoin-holders, how exactly do you make payments?

Most people who invest in Bitcoin in South Africa would’ve used exchanges like that of Luno and Revix, with their Bitcoin sitting in a consolidated wallet held by the respective companies. So, you need to transfer your desired Bitcoin amount that you want to spend into a wallet that has lightning network capabilities.

Your chosen exchange will likely have the ability to send a Bitcoin amount to another wallet — which you’ll need to create. Firstly, download a Bitcoin wallet app onto your smartphone, one recommended wallet app confirmed to work is that of Munn wallet. This is where your Bitcoin will be held, and you’ll be assigned a unique wallet address on your Munn wallet. Use this address to send an amount of BTC from your preferred exchange to your new self-custodian wallet. Luno even has a tutorial for this.

Now you just need a Bitcoin QR reader.

CryptoQR from CryptoConvert is the go-to, and acts as a QR reader for Bitcoin transactions. It will then work with your chosen wallet to help perform payments.

Open the CryptoQR app and connect it to your chosen wallet (in this case, your Bitcoin wallet on the Munn app), and you’re good to go.

When making a purchase at Pick n Pay, inform the teller that you will be paying in Bitcoin, and use the CryptoQR app to scan the QR code that is generated on the point-of-sale terminal as per usual, confirm the wallet you’ll be using, and enter your PIN (created upon set-up).

Transaction fees may differ depending on the business of the lightning network, but keep in mind there will be a very small BTC network fee for each purchase (many customers are reporting less than 50 cents to a fraction of a cent).
