Is the Entertainer App Worth the Money? Here’s Our Review!
Should you splash out on the 2-for-1 app or keep your hard earned cash?

The Entertainer app is far from new to South Africa, but surprisingly some people are yet to hear about the Buy-One-Get-One-Free app or try it out. But hold the phone – The Entertainer Cape Town, for example, offers over 1,540 Buy-One-Get-One-Free deals for some of the best restaurants, bars, informal dining, attractions, leisure activities, spas, salons and more in Cape Town, so, what’s stopping them? For me, it was the fear of splashing out a few hundred Rand on an app that I wasn’t sure would really save me money.
There are so many deals or coupon business out there that promise all sorts of big savings for their clients but at the end of the year, when the deal has expired you find that you’re a few hundred Randelas down with nothing but a bucket-load of worthless coupons to show for it. So, with that in mind, I decided to test out The Entertainer App right here in Cape Town and let you know if the app is truly worth the R495 price tag.
If you have never heard of The Entertainer before, then it’s clear that you have been hiding under a poorly located rock for the past few years. For a little while now South Africans in the know have been using the app in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban to visit some of their favourite restaurants, spas, salons, holiday spots, and more at a half the price than advertised. It seems like a savings bonanza just waiting to happen but how can you truly know unless you see what’s on offer on the app and ‘try’ before you buy? The truth is you only really get a good idea of the vouchers and savings available once you buy the app. To be fair it is very tricky to judge the value of something when you can’t see what’s inside the box and I have to say what’s inside is a real treasure!
I absolutely love explore the Cape Town restaurant scene, so when I opened the app for the first time the Food & Drink section was my first port of call. Here the app shows you a list of eateries and fast food spots closest to you that are offering deals. Of course, if you’re looking slightly further afield then you can also search by restaurant name, area, or even food type (for example pizza, coffee, steak, etc). So let’s see what’s on offer on the food front.
If you have the Entertainer app then you can take advantage of a Buy-One-Get-One-Free Gelato scoop deal from my favourite Gelato spot in Sea Point, Venezia Ice Cream Parlour. For R31 you can get 2 scoops of gelato and then get 2 scoops of Gelato free for a buddy, your special someone … or yourself, if you’re a four scoops kind of guy (no judgement here, I’m right there with you!).
If it’s a full meal you want then pop into one of my favourite spots at the V&A Waterfront, Mondiall and enjoy a Buy-One-Get-One-Free main meal deal. I got the chance to review their new menu recently and it is beyond amazing. Click here to read my review on the new menu at Mondiall now. I’d recommend you big or go home and try Mondiall’s Signature Fish Tacos (R160) and the famous Wagyu Cheese Burger (R135) and get the cheapest meal free paying only R160 for both main meals! I can’t tell you which meal is better – best bet is to order both and share.
For wine lovers, this year’s Cape Town Entertainer app also saw the launch of the new Wineries section featuring offers for dining, wine tasting and attractions at over fifty wine farms in the region! If you’ve got the app then I recommend checking out Eagle’s Nest wines in Constantia. It’s the most beautiful wine farm with a tasting room and picnic area to die for. When it comes to wine tasting venues it doesn’t get better than this and for R50 you can enjoy a wine tasting for one and try their stunning selection of wines. And, of course, with The Entertainer you can cash in on the Buy-One-Get-One-Free offer and enjoy two wine tastings for just R50.
But it’s not all about food – there are loads of other specials on the app as well. If it’s relaxation you’re after then you need to pay a visit to Enmasse Cape Town for a Massage and Tea Tasting experience. I paid them a visit and it was one of the most relaxing experiences ever! Enmasse is great because it’s almost like a massage and a yoga or stretching session in one. The massage therapists are highly skilled and you will leave feeling like a million bucks. For just R425 you and a partner can enjoy a massage followed by a tea tasting at Enmasse in Gardens.
Another great deal to take advantage of is Buy-One-Get-One-Free entry to the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum at the V&A Waterfront. For just R65 you and a buddy can get in and walk around this super interactive museum. I won’t lie I had a tear in my eye when watching the Springbok short film at the museum, it’s inspiring stuff! Or, if you’d rather laugh it all off then you could pay a visit to the Cape Town Comedy Club for a stand-up comedy show and only pay R120 for two entries into the comedy club on a Saturday night.
Ok so, let’s assume that I used my Entertainer app to do all this stuff over one weekend. Over the weekend I would have saved R401 using the Entertainer just a handful of times. And, when you consider that the app costs R495 it almost pays for itself with just a select few activities. Obviously, you have to spend money to save money but if you’re the kind of person who is always out and about exploring and trying new things then The Entertainer will definitely save you money in the long run. Of course, I just received the Cape Town app but according to The Entertainer team the Joburg & Pretoria and Durban apps are just as packed with great stuff to eat, see, and do.
The Entertainer is also available in a printed book format, if you’re the type of person who likes to keep track of your vouchers on paper instead. And, even though it’s already June there is still loads of time to take advantage of the vouchers available – heck you could even buy it just for the December holidays if you want! But wait there’s more! If you get the app version then you will also be treated to additional exclusive offers each month, including brunches, new restaurant openings and special promotions! They’re always adding great new stuff to the app so if you get bored of what’s already on offer you have lots to look forward to.
