There’s no question; gin is the new black…. ummm, or something like that. The point is gin is crazy popular at the moment; restaurants all over Cape Town and Joburg are offering speciality gin cocktail menus alongside their wine lists and dedicated gin bars seem to be popping up all over the show. Yup, gin is no longer just about your granny’s G&T – it’s the new ‘it’ spirit of mixologists and consumers alike. Which is great because it means that South Africans can now look forward to discovering all sorts of fabulous gins from around the world (yay!) The Botanist, the latest premium gin to arrive on our shores is a great example of what’s to come from the gin industry and I’m sure this is just the beginning of a very exciting new trend.

Hand-crafted on the wild Hebidean island of Islay, this premium artisanal gin is a real pleasure to drink whether mixed to perfection in a cocktail or simply enjoyed along with a tonic water. The Botanist offers drinkers a wonderfully complex gin with layer after layer of flavour. This is all thanks to the fact that the gin is trickle distilled and made with a rather impressive harvest of 22 botanicals, that have been hand-picked by an expert foraging team from the island.

Botanist Gin launch

I got the chance to experience this new gin in a variety of cocktails and paired with nothing but a good old craft tonic water and a slice of lemon. The Botanist pairs beautifully with citrus flavours including lemon, lime and orange as well as with spicy notes like cinnamon and florals like lavender and rose. But, no matter how you drink it The Botanist goes done smoothly every time. It’s a satin-smooth gin with delicious floral aromas and a rich, mellow taste and is officially my new favourite spirit of choice.
