Big news for fried chicken fans, one of the biggest chicken franchises in the US is making its way to South Africa this year! Founded in 1972 in New Orleans, Popeyes is an iconic American brand with restaurants spanning more than 25 countries, with South Africa being the latest to join the fold. Here are all the details you need about the first Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen South Africa store opening this year.

The great news is we don’t have to wait long for our Popeyes fix as the first store is opening in SA this July. South African franchisee, Siyaghopa Trading Group, will be opening its first Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen quick service restaurant in Sandton City, Johannesburg on 13 July 2017.  “We are bringing the best of the American South to meet Africa’s South, and we have no doubt that the culinary similarities – including the melting pot of flavours and festive traditions – will be well received by South African guests,” said Jaye Sinclair, CEO of Siyaghopa Trading Group. Sinclair also went on to explain that following the first store opening at Sandton City, Popeyes has plans to expand to the rest of the country soon. “Going forward, we plan to expand the brand nationally, in a variety of locations, venues and formats, to ensure the majority of South Africa has access to Popeyes in the near future.”

As for the menu, South Africans can look forward to favourites like the Popeyes Bonafide Chicken, a variety of sandwiches and wraps, desserts, drinks, and kiddies meals on the menu. Popeyes is well-known for both its chicken pieces and chicken tenders and we can’t wait to see how this fried chicken stacks up to the brands we already have here in South Africa. The Bonafide Chicken pieces come in two flavours, spicy or mild, and are marinated for at least 12 hours, then hand-battered, hand-breaded and bursting with bold Louisiana flavour. As for the Chicken Tenders, you can have that spicy, mild, or blackened (batter-free and non-breaded, but still bursting Popeyes flavour).

Desserts on the menu include delights like Cinnamon Apple Pie and Pecan Pie. We’re also hoping that the Popeyes South Africa stores will stock the selection of Popeyes fresh brewed Cane Sweeeet Iced Teas – made with 100% cane sugar from a special blend of orange pekoe and pekoe black teas from the Far East and South America, it is said to be the perfect complement to their bold, Louisiana flavours.
