The Best Spots for Whale Watching in Cape Town

The Cape Coastal area is pretty much ground zero for whale-watching, seeing thousands of tourists and locals flock to the coast’s seaside towns in the hope of catching some aquatic-mammal action; but which spots are the best?

Of course, Hermanus is the first to be mentioned by most people, featuring an annual Whale Festival which almost guarantees some great sightings and breachings. The Overberg town also features the Whale House Museum, so you can scrub up on your whale trivia and history while visiting the bustling yet quaint area.

While home to an amazing naval base and museum, Simon’s Town is also a fantastic spot for whale-spotting. The area also features the sole permit for boat-based whale watching in the western half of the False Bay area from between Cape Point and Strandfontein, so that you can get up-cl0se and personal with the majestic ocean giants.

And any local who knows his whale-watching will vouch that Fish Hoek is one of the most underrated whale-spotting locales in the region. At the northern side of Fish Hoek Bay, between Fish Hoek Beach and Sunny Cove, the area is a favourite hang-out spot for Southern Right Whales. Many whales find themselves floating around right in the centre of the bay, 150-odd metres out from the beach, which makes for some spectacular viewings from guesthouses along the coast.
