The summer movie run in the States heats up as June rolls in, but that means one thing for us South Africans: enjoying some blockbuster titles as the cold engulfs the Republic. Looking at the wealth of cinema releases on the horizon, we round up the 10 most-anticipated movies arriving this month.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Release date: 7 June 2019
Fox’s X-Men franchise hits a pivotal point with the introduction of the Dark Phoenix storyline, seeing Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), along with the push of some cosmic elements, embrace the dark side of her powers. This leads to the remaining X-Men including Cyclops (Ty Sheridan), Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and others, to combat this new entity inside of Jean.
The Secret Life of Pets 2
Release date: 7 June 2019
The Secret Life of Pets 2 is packed with Illumination’s trademark irreverence and subversive humour, this time expanding on the story and bond between pets and their owners. The voice talents of Patton Oswald (Max), Eric Stonestreet (Duke), Kevin Hart (Snowball) all return, along with some new friends this time around.
Rocketman
Release date: 7 June 2019
While the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is still fresh in our minds, another music icon is getting his big-screen moment. Rocketman tells the story of Elton John and stars Taron Egerton (Kingsman) as John, with Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard also on the cast-list. The film follows John’s early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to his musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.
Men in Black: International
Release date: 14 June 2019
While there’s a whole new cast, the alien-hunting Men in Black are back! This time around, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson (who featured in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame together) take on the starring roles alongside Liam Neeson, and are tasked with investigating some extraterrestrial activity on Earth that sends them on a globe-spanning adventure.
A Dog’s Journey
Release date: 14 June 2019
If you feel like crying this month, A Dog’s Journey is the sequel to 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose, and brings more animal-human drama to poke your emotions. The sequel features the voice and acting talents of Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Kathryn Prescott, and Henry Lau, in a tale that shows the impact those beloved pooches have on our lives.
Shaft
Release date: 14 June 2019
The Shaft franchise following New York’s most suave Private Eye comes full circle with the latest instalment. Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree reprise their roles from past entries of the series, with a third generation of Shaft (Jessie T. Usher) joining the gang. Shaft also feature performances from Alexandra Ship, Matt Lauria, Titus Welliver, and Chris “Method Man” Smith.
The Dead Don’t Die

In the vain of Zombieland, The Dead Don’t Die looks to inject a bit of black humour and a tongue-in-cheek attitude to a zombie uprising. Starring Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Selena Gomez, Chloë Sevigny, and Steve Buscemi, the film follows three bespectacled police officers and a strange Scottish mortician during an undead outbreak in a small, isolated town.
Toy Story 4
Release date: 21 June 2019
While the third film ended in an absolutely perfect fashion, a fourth Toy Story entry arrives this month. Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the rest of the gang have found a new appreciation after being given by Andy Davis to Bonnie Anderson. They are introduced to Forky (Tony Hale), a spork that has been made into a toy, and embark on a road-trip adventure with their new-found friend.
Child’s Play
Release date: 21 June 2019
A horror icon gets a reboot with the return of Child’s Play, reintroducing the world to the demonic red-headed toy with a passion for killing. Acting as a reboot and somewhat of a remake of the original, the new iteration stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.
Annabelle Comes Home
Release date: 26 June 2019
Who would’ve thought that The Conjuring spin-off about a demonic doll would garner not one, but two sequels? Annabelle Comes Home follows on from 2014’s Annabelle and 2017’s Annabelle: Creation, whereby paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga from the primary Conjuring movies) attempt to restrain the demonic entity in Annabelle. Unfortunately, an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens evil spirits who set their sights on the Warren’s ten-year-old daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace), and her babysitters (Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife).
