2023 has already had some colossal film releases, but things are only getting started. The remainder of the year is full of some action-packed thrillers, haunting historical biopics, and some haunting horror to round out the year. We’ve highlighted 12 of the biggest movies heading your way for the remainder of 2023.

Oppenheimer

Release date: 21 July 2023

Coming from Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed director behind The Dark Knight TrilogyInception, and Tenet, Oppenheimer tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. The cast is jam-packed with some serious talent, including the likes of Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., and Gary Oldman.

Blue Beetle

Release date: 14 July 2023

Following The Flash, DC is now set on soft-rebooting their comic-book universe, and the first foray into that new world is Blue Beetle. The film follows college grad Jaime Reyes who finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero, Blue Beetle.

Meg 2: The Trench

Release date: 2 August 2023

The Meg was one of the underrated movies of 2018, delivering a fun, often silly, but self-aware CGI-filled shark-a-thon that had an element of dark humour. The sequel, titled Meg 2: The Trench, sees Jason Statham returning to take on the biggest Megalodon shark of them all.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Release date: 11 August 2023

Fans of vampiric horror are in for a treat this year as The Last Voyage of the Demeter is hitting cinemas and bringing arguably the greatest blood-sucker of all time back to the big-screen. Based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula, the story is set aboard the Russian schooner Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty-four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film details the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence on board the ship.

Strays

Release date: 18 August 2023

We’ve had a few talking animal movies in recent times, but none that really push the boundaries of adult humour. Well, Strays is here to do just that, telling the story of a discarded dog who meets some new friends for a city-spanning adventure. The film features the voice talents of Will Ferrell, playing a naïve, relentlessly optimistic Border Terrier, who is abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug (Will Forte; The Last Man on EarthMacGruber), with the new-found street pup hatching a revenge plan to get his former owner back.

The Equalizer 3

Release date: 1 September 2023

Denzel Washington’s subtle but brutal Equalizer movies have found quite the audience since the first film released back in 2014, and the third and final instalment is on the horizon with The Equalizer 3. Washington returns as former government assassin Robert McCall, who struggles to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past, but finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. The cast also sees the introduction of Dakota Fanning, who Washington shared the screen with in 2004’s Man on Fire.

Kraven the Hunter

Release date: 6 October 2023

The Sony/Marvel cinematic spin-off universe is expanding, with the next Spider-Man villain solo film, Kraven the Hunter, on the cards. The film continues the groundwork laid by the two Venom films, along with Jared Leto’s Morbius, which are all interconnected and tell the origin tales of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes. Kraven the Hunter explores the beginnings and rise of Sergei Kravinoff, a big-game hunter who is given incredible strength, speed, and tracking powers, along with the ability to influence animals. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Sergei/Kraven, with Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe also making up the cast.

Dune: Part 2

Release date: 3 November 2023

Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothée Chalamet all return for the second part of the sci-fi epic Dune, which will pick up after the events of the first film. The film will explore the continuing journey of Paul Atreides, who is united with Chani and the Fremen. As he seeks revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family, he endeavours to prevent a terrible future that only he can predict. Black Widow‘s Florence Pugh also joins the cast. Expect a big finale from director Denis Villeneuve.

Saw X

Release date: 27 October 2023

Yup, a tenth saw film is on the cards for 2023, and one which acts as a ‘midquel’ falling between the first and second movies in the franchise. Tobin Bell is back as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, alongside Shawnee Smith, who played Amanda in the first three Saw movies (she also appeared in archive footage in the other instalments).

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Release date: 25 December 2023

Director James Wan and Jason Mamoa return for the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, which also sees the return of Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Also appearing are Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, a marine biologist obsessed with finding Atlantis; Vincent Regan as Atlan, the first king of Atlantis; Jani Zhao as Stingray; Indya Moore as Karshon; and Pilou Asbæk in an undisclosed role.

The Exorcist

Release date: 13 October 2023

If you thought it took long for Avatar to get its sequel, a direct follow-up to the original 1973 Exorcist movie is on the way, fifty years later. Jason Blum is a producer on the film, which follows a 12-year-old girl who becomes possessed by a demon. In desperation, her mother calls for assistance from someone who’s been through the same experience in order to vanquish the evil.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Release date: 20 October 2023

Martin Scorsese is back with his next big cinematic epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma who are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major BOI investigation directed by a 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White.
