We take a look at the biggest movies hitting cinemas this month.

June rolls in with some pretty big movies hitting the big-screens across South Africa. From dramas and horrors, to comedies and action flicks, there’s something for everyone this month. So without further ado; here’s our most anticipated movies of June 2016:
A Bigger Splash
Release date: 3 June 2016
Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tilda Swinton, and Ralph Fiennes star in this drama that follows a dangerous game of jealousy, passion and intrigue. It follows Marianne and Paul, a high profile couple, recovering by way of an idyllic holiday on the remote island of Pantelleria, Italy, before they are disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Harry and Penelope, an old friend and his daughter. Things get a little tense when old feelings and pasts begin emerging.
Hardcore Henry
Release date: 3 June 2016
Hardcore Henry, which stars South African actor Shartlo Copely (District 9, Elysium), is an action film heavily inspired by video games and old-school action, being told from a first person perspective, putting you, the viewer, in the shoes of the hero. It picks up as you’re brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped by an evil warlord. Quite a simple premise, but the film looks spectacular and has a lot of twists and turns in store for audiences.
Money Monster
Release date: 3 June 2016
Starring the talents of George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell, and Dominic West,Money Monster tells the story of an irate investor (O’Connell) who takes financial television show host Lee Gates (Clooney) hostage live on air as the world watches on, in an attempt to uncover the big-money lies, deceit, and underhandedness of the finance industry. The event could have global ramification and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Warcraft
Release date: 10 June 2016
The Warcraft movie has had its time in development hell in Hollywood over the years, but Blizzard Entertainment’s epic war story finally arrives this month. The film depicts the long-winded war between the human race and orcs (similar to the first game), and has been given a budget of over $100m. While the breathtaking CGI battle sequences are the attraction here, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Dominic Cooper (aka Howard Stark from Captain America) all lend their acting chops to the film, making for quite an ambitious video-game-adaptation-to-film project.
The Conjuring 2
Release date: 10 June 2016
A sequel to arguably one of the scariest movies ever made arrives this month, as the Conjuring 2 sees its release across SA. Picking up on another case from Based on the true stories of paranormal investigators, Lorraine and Ed Warren, the sequel picks up as the two demonologists travel to examine strange occurrences in a house in north London in 1977. Bizarre phenomena lead the two to believe that divorced single mother, Margaret Hodgson, and her four young children are being plagued by malicious spirits.
Now You See Me 2
Release date: 10 June 2016
Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliff joins the all-star cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, and Dave Franco in Now You See Me 2. The sequel picks up one year after the original, which saw a group of elusive magicians outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style spectacles. The Four Horsemen resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet.
Finding Dory
Release date: 16 June 2016
The long-awaited Finding Nemo sequel is finally here, which sees friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, Dory, going in search of her family after she recalls childhood memories of “the jewel of Monterey, California”. Together with Nemo and Marlin, the trio set off for the Monterey Marine Life Institute, where she meets some colourful sea creatures and learns the real meaning of family.
I Am Wrath
Release date: 17 June 2016
John Travolta returns to the big-screen as a man out for justice after a group of corrupt police officers are unable to catch his wife’s killer. This revenge-fueled action romp looks to be in the vain of the likes of the Taken franchise and Edge of Darkness, and could be one of the hidden gems of the year.

Keanu
Release date: 17 June 2016
Easily the most bizarre movie this month, Keanu stars Key & Peele‘s Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key in an off-the-wall action comedy about two men and a cat. The film kicks off when Rell’s life is changed by a cute kitten arriving on his doorstep. Unfortunately, one weekend later, the kitten is abducted by persons unknown. Now Rell and his cousin, Clarence, are men on a mission to find the cat against the odds.

The Nice Guys
Release date: 17 June 2016
A buddy-cop film for the new age, The Nice Guys stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as lawmen who stumble upon a shocking conspiracy with far-reaching consequences in 1970s Los Angeles. The private eye and enforcer band together to crack a case involving a missing girl and investigate a fading porn star’s suicide, two mysteries, which become inextricably linked to the upper echelons.
Independence Day: Resurgence
Release date: 24 June 2016
When first hearing that a sequel to Independence Day was in the works, it was hard not to be sceptical, but we’ve got to admit – we’re super excited for it! Jeff Goldblum’s back, and so too are those mischievous aliens in Independence Day: Resurgence. Twenty years after Earth was left reeling from one invasion, the saucers are here to terrorise a new generation. You’ve got extras running in terror from huge alien death rays, tentacle creatures locked up in top secret labs, and some state-of-the-art special effects. Consider us sold.
Central Intelligence
Release date: 24 June 2016
Two of the biggest stars in the world today, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, star in Central Intelligence, which sees a good-natured accountant (Hart) reconnect with a former schoolmate (Johnson) on Facebook, who turns out to be a lethal CIA agent. From a nostalgic back-slapping reunion recounting awkward school day memories, the unlikely buddy team are catapulted into a top secret case, which involves shootouts, double-crosses and international espionage.
