September marks the beginning of the spring and summer season, so it’s only fitting that the movie release schedule heats up too. There’s no colossal big-budget sequels or franchise releases, but there’s more than enough unique and promising films heading our way to get excited for:

War Dogs

Much like The Wolf of Wall Street, War Dogs falls under the bizarre-yet-true story category. Directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Philips, the film follows two young arms dealers, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli (played by Jonah Hill and Miles Teller), who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to supply weapons to American allies in Afghanistan in 2007. At first overwhelmed by the prospect of being rich, the unlikely international arms dealer duo soon find themselves in danger abroad and beset with difficulties back home.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good buddy-cop flick, and Skiptrace could be something to fill that void this month. Bennie Chan (Jackie Chan), a detective from Hong Kong, has been investigating a notorious criminal named Victor Wong for over a decade. When his niece gets involved with Wong’s syndicate, Chan must track down and convince Connor Watts (Johnny Knoxville), a fast-talking American gambler, to team up and return to China in order to rescue his niece and foil the Chinese kingpin.

Aaron Paul, Jamie Dornan, and Sarah Gadon star in this adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. The story follows young Louis Drax who suffers a near-fatal injury and falls into a deep coma on his 9th birthday. Determined to solve the young boy’s strange affliction, Dr. Allan Pascal (Dornan) begins exploring the mysterious circumstances surrounding the boy’s accident, blurring the line between fantasy and reality.

Discovering that the event was provoked by a seemingly innocent artificial being who was made in a laboratory, she’s forced to curb her fascination and determine whether or not to terminate the “human” known as Morgan.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Sulley tells the story of American pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (played by Tom Hanks), whose heroism captured the world’s attention when he landed US Airways Flight 1549 by gliding the plane along the water in the Hudson River off Manhattan in New York City. After a troubled take-off, Sully’s bravery and emergency landing managed to save all 155 of his passengers.

Long-time passion project of Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party, an R-rated animated film, arrives this month. Frank is a sausage, whose peaceful existence among various groceries in a supermarket is interrupted when he and his friends are picked by a customer. Once a life goal, they soon discover the disturbing truth when the woman takes them home to prepare a meal. Faced with torture and death, he and his buddies hatch a plan to escape.

Initially titled The Woods (as a secret faux name during filming), this new horror instalment is a direct sequel to 1999’s cult classic The Blair Witch Project. The film picks up a couple years after the original when a group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister Heather in 1994, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch.

Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke lead an all-star cast in this action-packed remake. An Old West town is besieged by industrialist, Bartholomew Bogue, forcing the desperate residents to hire the services of seven gun men, headed by bounty hunter, Sam Chisolm. The ragtag outlaws set about preparing for a violent altercation with savage thieves during which time they find themselves fighting for much more than just money.

Now in possession of their precious cargo, he’s forced to call in favours and take the car chase onto Munich’s high-speed Autobahn to save his long-time girlfriend and escape the gang’s ruthless mob boss.
