It’s only the beginning of July and we already have some great movies lining up to entertain us this weekend. From shelled-heroes to sports dramas, here’s the biggest films hitting SA this Friday, 1 July:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Release date: 1 July 2016

The sizeable success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot meant that a sequel was inevitable, and we’re pretty excited. We loved the first and can’t wait for the follow-up, which sees the return Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, and the original Turtles cast.

This time, though, the movie is directed by Earth To Echo‘s David Green, who takes over from Jonathan Liebesman. One of the new faces that will grace the screen will be Stephen Amell, who plays the role of Casey Jones, a love interest of April O’Neil. Well-known monstrous villains Bebop and Rocksteady are making an appearance too, and Tyler Perry is enters the franchise as Baxter Stockman, another key Turtles villain.

The BFG

Release date: 1 July 2016

Based on the Roald Dahl favourite, a girl named Sophie befriends the BFG, a big friendly giant, whose frightening first impression gives way to his good nature and kind spirit. Considered an outcast by his peers for not eating children, the two form an unlikely bond and embark on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have invaded the human world. Stephen Spielberg is directing this one and the visual effects look incredible. Should be a nostalgic and enjoyable retelling of the classic tale.

Woodlawn

Jon Voight, Sean Astin, and Caleb Castille star in this true story drama about a gifted high school football player who must learn to embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field. This looks to be an emotive drama with some feel-good inspiration behind it.
