If you’re deciding to visit the local theatres this long weekend, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a variety of new movies on offer, including a returning espionage franchise, a female-led thriller, and a disturbing drama to put you on the edge of your seat.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise is back and bringing some more tense moments and high-octane action in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. 

Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team take on their most impossible mission yet: eradicating the Syndicate – an International rogue organization, as highly skilled as they are, who are committed to destroying the IMF. This Christopher McQuarrie action film co-stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Bald-win. 

Lila & Eve

Jennifer Lopez steps off the stage to star in a new movie releasing this week, Lila & Eve. Lila (Lopez), a grief-stricken mother reeling from her son’s murder, attends a support group where she meets Eve (Viola Davis), who urges her to take matters into her own hands to track down her son’s killers. They soon embark on a journey of revenge, but also recovery.

Mommy

In a fictionalized futurist world, a new law allows distressed parents to abandon their troubled children to the hospital system. Diane “Die” Despres (Anne Dorval), a feisty single mother, has to pick up her teenage son Steve (Antoine-Olivier Pilon) from the institution where he lives, because he’s hurt a smaller boy. Anne now has to see if she can manage her son Steve who is growing with anger and rage as each day goes by.
