5 Best Werewolf Movies You Haven’t Seen
We countdown some of the best (and most overlooked) werewolf flicks you need to see!
We’re big fans of werewolves over here at MenStuff HQ, so any lycanthrope-themed film will catch our attention, and we’ve highlighted a few under-the-radar entries for anyone with an affinity for the claw-‘n-roar genre.
Eight for Silver / The Cursed
The Cursed, which was originally named Eight for Silver (an admittedly much-cooler name), is a fairly lower-budget horror from director Sean Ellis may not have had the mainstream buzz as other genre entries over recent years, but it’s a deserving mention given its spooky atmosphere, meticulous slow-burn nature, shocking gore, and interesting spin on the werewolf lore (not to mention the creepiest scarecrow you’ve ever seen). On top of that, the cast is pretty solid, with Boyd Holbrook (Logan) leading the charge with a great performance, along with some standout supporting actors and actresses.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow
The Wolf of Snow Hollow is one of the most unique and interesting werewolf movies to date, telling the story of a small-town deputy sheriff who is in way over his head when people start disappearing and rumours of a werewolf begin to circulate. It’s excellently acted and directed by Jim Cummings, and has a dark humourous edge to its mysterious narrative that culminates into a great finale.
Dog Soldiers
Dog Soldiers has an almost cult-like following at this point, but it’s crazy how many people still haven’t seen the iconic 2002 action-horror. The film follows a squad of soldiers fighting to survive an attack by a pack of werewolves during a military training exercise in the Scottish Highlands, and the claustrophobic setting of the soldiers barricading themselves in a farmhouse only adds to the tension. It’s violent, the practical werewolf effects are still stellar, and the whole experience is just a must-watch for any fan of the genre.
Werewolves Within
Leaning more into the comedy side of things, Werewolves Within is a sorely underrated movie that is loosely based on the game of the same name. Starring the always-hilarious Sam Richardson (from Detroiters), the movie follows a group of people in a small Vermont town who get trapped in a snowstorm only to suspect one of them is a werewolf. It’s silly, gory, and has a few twists, turns, and funny moments to keep you entertained, while still delivering some decent werewolf moments.
Werewolves
Starring Frank Grillo (Captain America: Civil War, Boss Level), Werewolves explores a supermoon event that triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died, and a year later, the Supermoon is back. Werewolves is directed by Steven C. Miller (Line of Duty, Escape Plan 2) and uses a lot of practical effects for the werewolves, giving off serious Dog Soldiers vibes (see above). Buzz around Werewolves is high, and international critics who’ve seen the film are loving the throwback creature-feature. It hits South African cinemas on 27 December 2024.
