2019 is coming to close, and December brings a cracker of big-screen releases to the forefront, including some beloved franchise sequels, a war-epic, and, of course, the final chapter in the current Star Wars saga.

Frozen 2

Release date: 6 December 2019

Frozen is Frozen – you know what you’re going to get. But for many, the catchy-song-laden Disney adventure is a favourite for its unique take on the ‘princess in a castle’ story. The sequel sees the talents of Kristin Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad all return, and is set three years after the events of the first film. Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven embark on a journey beyond their kingdom of Arendelle in order to discover the origin of Elsa’s magical powers and save their home after a mysterious voice calls out to Elsa.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Release date: 12 December 2019

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan return for another round of Jumanji, along with the help of Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Danny Glover, and Danny DeVito. As the gang returns to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Release date: 20 December 2019

Of course, every December movie release schedule for the past couple years has been headlined by a Star Wars movie, but this time it’s a little extra special as The Rise of Skywalker sees the conclusion of the long-running Skywalker saga portion of the Star Wars universe. Set one year after the events of The Last Jedi, the remnants of the Resistance face the First Order once again — while reckoning with the past and their own inner turmoil. Meanwhile, the ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches its climax.

Midway

Release date: 25 December 2019

No one loves a chaotic sci-fi blockbuster more than Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012), but the veteran director is taking a real-life scenario for his inspiration this time around. Midway chronicles the battle of Midway following the bombing of Pearl Harbour, and features some spectacular CGI, dogfights, and emotional beats to keep audiences (hopefully) glued to the screen. Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, and Nick Jonas all star.

Spies in Disguise

Release date: 25 December 2019

Featuring the unmistakably likeable voice talent duo of Will Smith and Tom Holland, Spies in Disguise is a bit of a wacky animated entry from first-time directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, but maybe it’s exactly what we need this time of year. It follows the world’s best spy (Smith) who is accidentally turned into a pigeon, leaving him to rely on his nerdy tech officer (Holland) to save the world.
