The May movie schedule is packed with some long-awaited releases, two of which kickstart new trilogies. So, as we head into the full-blown summer movie release block (in the US, while it’s getting chillier down here in South Africa), here are the 5 biggest movies to enjoy this May:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Release date: 10 May 2024

Following Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes trilogy that began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and concluded with 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues on from the first three entries but takes place many years later, picking up with Cornelius, the son of Caeser who fronted the last three films. Earth, now almost eradicated entirely of humans, sees one ape leader begin to enslave other groups to find human technology, which sets Cornelius off on a journey to find out more about the past in order to save the future.

Tarot

Release date: 10 May 2024

Directed by Moonfall’s Spenser Cohen, Tarot is a horror film surrounding (you guessed it) tarot cards. A group of friends unwittingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within a cursed deck of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate, racing against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.

Imaginary Friends

Release date: 17 May 2024

Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski headline this fun comedy about a girl who can see her own and other people’s imaginary friends, many of whom have been abandoned over the years as the children grew up.

The Strangers: Chapter 1

Release date: 17 May 2024

2008’s The Strangers left quite an impression on the horror world, and the third film in the series, Chapter 1, will be a prequel to the original entry. Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez star as a couple who come into contact with three psychopathic masked strangers while on a roadtrip. While acting as a prequel, this film is the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone films.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Release date: 24 May 2024

On the prequel side of things, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will tell the story of Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Mad: Fury Road. This time, The Queen’s Gambit Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of the legendary warrior who has to fight for survival in a ravaged, petro-fueled post-apocalyptic world.
