August is here and brings with it some seriously spicy movie releases, including a veteran horror franchise sequel, a reboot of an iconic dark superhero tale, and some twists in the form of a new film from M. Night Shyamalan. Here are the films to catch this August:

The Bikeriders

Release date: 2 August 2024

The Bikeriders includes a stellar cast featuring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, and Norman Reedus. It follows a biker crew known as the Vandals, and one of their key members Benny, who meets a young woman named Kathy. As the crew transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.

The Exorcism

Release date: 2 August 2024

Russell Crowe has been leaning into the horror genre more and more over recent years, and the Australian actor’s latest entry is another demonic-possession movie, but totally unrelated to The Pope’s Exorcist (2023), which he starred in too. The Excorsim gets a little meta, and sees Crowe playing a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film about exorcisms. His estranged daughter, Lee, wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.

Trap

Release date: 2 August 2024

The master of twists, M. Night Shyamalan (Signs, The Village), describes his latest movie as an “experience”. Whatever that means, it stars Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, and Saleka Shyamalan. It follows Cooper, a serial killer dubbed “The Butcher” who joins his daughter at a concert for pop star Lady Raven, but the Butcher realises the concert is a trap set by the police to catch him. It’s intriguing premise, but anyone who has seen a Shyamalan movie in the past knows there’s probably more than meets the eye to this crime thriller.

Borderlands

Release date: 9 August 2024

Based on the video game series of the same name, Borderlands follows Lillith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous outlaw who returns to her home planet and forms an unexpected alliance with a team of unlikely heroes. Together, they battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power. The film also stars Kevin Hart, the voice of Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Alien: Romulus

Release date: 16 August 2024

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a new entry into the beloved Alien franchise, but director Fede Alvarez (Evil DeadDon’t Breathe) is bringing the iconic sci-fi IP back with Alien: Romulus. Set in-between Alien and its 1986 sequel Aliens, Romulus follows a group of young space colonisers who, while scavenging a derelict space station, come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu; and is produced by Ridley Scott, who directed the original Alien.

The Crow

Release date: 23 August 2024

1994’s The Crow is a cult-classic superhero-ish film that was surrounded by controversy due to the death of star Brandon Lee, who died on the set of the movie. There have been some less-than-amazing sequels, but the IP is getting a second-shot on the big-screen with a reboot that stars Bill Skarsgård, FKA twigs, and Danny Huston. The film follows soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) who are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.
