June marks the middle of the 2023 movie season, and as things go there are some big-name releases hitting South African cinemas, including a new horror nightmare, the return of iconic 80s alien robots, and a veteran whip-toting hero making his comeback. Here are out picks for the biggest movies of June 2023:

The Boogeyman

We’ve seen a few Stephen King projects being adapted into films over the years, but one of his most terrifying properties, The Boogeyman, will see the light of day in 2023. The film is adapted from the famed horror writer’s short story from 1973, and is directed by Rob Savage. Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, Marin Ireland, Madison Hu, LisaGay Hamilton, and David Dastmalchian all star in what will likely go down as a horror classic.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

After the smash success that was the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the sequel will see the light of day in 2023. Across the Spider-Verse (Part 1) will continue Miles Morales’ journey as Spider-Man, while also once again featuring Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man, and include Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099, an alternate version of Spider-Man from the future.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Everyone’s favourite robots-in-disguise franchise is back, as the latest entry into the Transformers film franchise arrives this June. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set in 1994, and takes place after the events of Bumblebee but before the first Transformers movie. It follows Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots’ first encounter with the Maximals, a similar race of robot lifeforms who transform into giant animals. The film is directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) with franchise producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura returning to the series, with Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback in the starring roles.

The Flash

Release date: 16 June 2023 | Book online

After Zack Snyder’s original cut of Justice League reinvigorated the franchise, only for Warner Bros. to pull the plug on a number of upcoming DC movies, The Flash own standalone movie arrives this June. The film is directed by IT‘s Andy Muschietti and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Kiersey Clemons, Maribel Verdú, and Ron Livingston. The story sees The Flash travels back in time to prevent his mother’s murder, which brings unintended consequences.

Asteroid City

Release date: 16 June 2023 | Book online

You know with any Wes Anderson movie, you’re going to get a quirky story and an outrageously colourful production design, and Asteroid City doesn’t break that mould. Starring Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, and Jeff Goldblum, the film is a ’50s-set comedy about different sets of parents accompanying their space-obsessed kids to a convention in the desert, where they all must quarantine together after receiving an unexpected visitor from the skies.

Knights of the Zodiac

Release date: 23 June 2023 | Book online

Knights of the Zodiac is a more obscure film releasing this month, but one that has caught our attention nonetheless. It is a fantasy action film based on the manga which also became an animated series. It follows street orphan Seiya, who discovers that he is destined to protect the godess of war reincarnated in a young girl’s body in order to save the world. It’s full of fantastical fight scenes, great visual effects, and should be a fun ride.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Release date: 30 June 2023 | Book online

Harrison Ford returns as the legendary hero archaeologist, with the new entry into the Indiana Jones franchise, this time directed by James Mangold (Ford v FerrariLogan). Starring along with Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), and Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore). Both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas served as executive producers, with legendary producer John Williams once again composing the score.
