The tail-end of 2023 is upon us with the December movie slate bringing in its usual fair of holiday cheer (and fear), with some Christmas-themed entries, a superhero sequel, and some smaller films that are definitely worth your attention. Here are the biggest film releases of December 2023:

Thanksgiving

Release date: 1 December 2023

Coming from Eli Roth, Thanksgiving tells the story of a serial killer known as John Carver, who appears in the small town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, following a Black Friday riot that ended in tragedy.

Silent Night

Release date: 8 December 2023

Hard BoiledFace-Off, and Mission Impossible II director John Woo has been quiet for a few years, but the acclaimed action director is back with his new film, Silent Night. It stars Joel Kinnaman as a father aggrieved by the death of his child as a result of being caught in the crossfire of a gang fight. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.

Wonka

Release date: 8 December 2023

We may not have needed another movie based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but here we are. Wonka is an origin story, of sorts, telling the tale of how Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka went from a young adult selling chocolate in a small candy store to an eccentric genius known all over the world.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Release date: 22 December 2023

After a massive cull of stars, no one really understands what is happening with the DC cinematic universe at this point (who’s in and who’s out!?), but the sequel to Aquaman may provide some answers. The film again features Black Manta, who, after failing to defeat Aquaman the first time, gains the power of a mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman forges an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.

Migration

Release date: 22 December 2023

For some family fun this December, Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Danny DeVito lend their voices to the duck-themed animated adventure, Migration. It follows the Mallard family who is in a bit of a rut. While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids, teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen, the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.

Ferrari

Release date: 29 December 2023

Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) embodies the Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari in this biopic that picks up during the summer of 1957.
