September’s movie releases bring a healthy dose of drama and thrills for people to indulge in, with everything from book adaptations to some interesting fear-of-heights adventures to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Release date: 2 September 2022

Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller’s adaptation of English novelist A.S. Byatt’s short story collection The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye hits cinemas this September. Three Thousand Years of Longing stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton in a mesmerising and eye-popping adventure which sees a woman who finds a djinn (or genie) that grants her three wishes. She proceeds, despite her scepticism, which results in some unexpected events.

Fall

Release date: 9 September 2022

For those who tend to steer clear of heights, this will either be a nightmare for you, or the best form of safe thrill-seeking. Fall follows best friends Becky and Hunter who love adventure and pushing the limits. However, after climbing 609 metres to the top of a remote, abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded with no way down.

Where the Crawdads Sing

Release date: 16 September 2022

Where the Crawdads Sing is a big-screen adaptation of the 2018 coming-of-age murder mystery novel by American author Delia Owens. The story follows two timelines that slowly intertwine. The first timeline describes the life and adventures of a young girl named Kya as she grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina, while the second follows a grisly murder that Kya is accused of.

Don’t Worry Darling

Release date: 23 September 2022

Olivia Wilde’s second film as director is the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, which follows a couple in the 1950s who move to a utopian desert community, only to learn that not everything is as it seems. The film stars Wilde, along with Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan.

Ticket to Paradise

Release date: 23 September 2022

Academy Award winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite on the big screen as exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made. Ticket to Paradise is a romantic comedy about the sweet surprise of second chances.

Smile

Release date: 30 September 2022

For a bit of a horror twist this September, Smile brings a supernatural yet psychological take on the genre, with Dr. Rose Cotter, who witnesses a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient. Following that, Rose starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain and an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life. Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

The Woman King

Release date: 30 September 2022

Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega star in The Woman King. It’s the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen
