As 2022 rolls on, April sees a host of exciting movie releases coming your way, including the long-delayed introduction of Marvel anti-hero, Morbius, the sequel to 2020’s smash-hit Sonic movie, and a new Dreamworks entry, along with some under-the-radar releases that deserve some more attention.

Morbius

Release date: 1 April 2022

After being delayed from 2020, Marvel and Sony’s vampiric anti-hero Morbius movie (which tells the origin story of classic Spider-Man villain, Morbius) is seeing its release in 2022. The plot follows Dr. Michael Morbius (played by Jared Leto), a dangerously ill doctor who is determined to save others suffering his same fate, and in a desperate gamble, combines his blood with that of a vampire bat. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease. Alongside Leto, Morbius stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson; with Daniel Espinosa (who helmed the Jake Gyllenhaal space-horror, Life) in the director’s chair.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Release date: 1 April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog broke the conception about all video game movies being bad when it released back in 2020, and the sequel is arriving this month. Ben Schwartz returns to voice Sonic, alongside James Marsen, with Jim Carrey also reprising his charismatic role as Dr. Robotnik. The sequel also sees the addition of Shemar Moore, Idris Elba (voicing Knuckles), and Colleen O’Shaughnessey (as the voice of Tails). The follow-up picks up after the events of the first movie as Sonic is out to prove his worth as a hero. He’ll have to face Dr. Robotnik (again), who has teamed up with a powerful individual known as Knuckles, as they seek to harness the power of a Chaos Emerald.

X

Release date: 1 April 2022

Starring Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, X is a tongue-in-cheek slasher set in 1979, where a group of young filmmakers sets out to make an adult film in rural Texas. When their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast members find themselves fighting for their lives.

The Bad Guys

Release date: 8 April 2022

The Bad Guys looks to be a surefire hit from DreamWorks, full of heart, good comedy, and a plot about redemption and second chances. It follows a group of animal criminals who are caught after years of countless heists, with their leader Mr. Wolf (Rockwell) making a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save his crew from prison: The Bad Guys will go good. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade, an arrogant (but adorable) guinea pig, The Bad Guys set out to fool the world that theyʼve been transformed. The voice cast also contains some serious talent in the form of Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Awkwafina, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Lilly Singh and Alex Borstein.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Release date: 14 April 2022

Harry Potter universe fans are in for some more action this April as the third instalment in the Fantastic Beasts prequel story hits the big-screen. The film once again follows Professor Albus Dumbledore, who knows that the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwaldʼs growing legion of followers.
