Godzilla has been having a huge resurgence in recent years, with the famed giant lizard getting a rebirth in Legendary’s Monsterverse with Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong. But Toho, the Japanese company that owns the Godzilla rights, is still pushing ahead with their own iterations of the beloved kaiju.

Their new movie, Godzilla Minus One, is set in the late 1940s, and with Godzilla arriving in Japan which has recently been brought to its knees by defeat in World War II. Explaining the film’s title in a press release: “after the war, Japan’s economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.”

Godzilla: Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and will be Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film, and the first in live action since Shin Godzilla. The deal between Legendary and Toho states that only one Godzilla film can be released per year, so Godzilla Minus One will see a swift 1 December 2023 release ahead of Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024, which will continue the Western Monsterverse.
