In September, we reported that there were murmurs around Hollywood that a King Kong vs Godzilla movie was being discussed, but now there is official confirmation that the gargantuan-sized face-off will be hitting theatres in 2020.

Legendary and Warner Bros. have announced that Godzilla vs Kong will arrive after 2017’s Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla 2 (2018).

“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” Legendary CEO Thomas Tull said in a statement. “As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

The Monarch organisation, which made the appearance in 2014’s Godzilla, will be the link in the films, with Monarch set to play a role in Kong: Skull Island and the bringing of the two creatures together in the mash-up film.

Other monsters joining the mayhem include King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

Kong: Skull Island, the first instalment of this planned cinematic universe, stars Tom Hiddleston, Sam Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Toby Kebbell. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce with Mary Parent.

Godzilla 2 will be written by Max Borenstein and directed by Gareth Edwards (currently working on Star Wars: Rogue One). Legendary is producing with Mary Parent and Alex Garcia will executive produce. The film is set to be released by Warner Bros. on June 8, 2018.
