3 Big Movies Releasing in SA this Weekend
We take a look at the notable movie releases hitting cinemas across SA.
February sees some pretty big releases hitting our cinemas, including the next instalment in a notable action-horror franchise, a throwback to the age of gangster flicks, and a film 20 years in the making. Here’s our most anticipated movies releasing in February 2017:
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Release date: 3 February 2017
The supposedly last RE sequel, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is looking to mark the end of the film franchise with a bang. Milla Jovovich returns as series protagonist Alice in the sequel, which picks up right after the last film, Resident Evil: Retribution, and sees Alice as the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s last stand against the undead. In returning to where it all began, she then finds out that the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a closing strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
MenStuff’s Jeremy Proome got to see the film early and had this to say about it:
“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a satisfying conclusion to the long-running franchise on the big-screen – but it’s not without its shortcomings. The bombastic finale suffers from choppy editing and horror-genre tropes, but at the end of the day, it delivers on the action in a big way and once again showcases Milla Jovovich’s ability to command the screen.”
Live by Night
Release date: 3 February 2017
Ben Affleck steps away from the cowl and cape of Batman to direct his love-letter to 1920s gangster movies with Live by Night, which follows a group of Boston-bred gangsters set up shop in balmy Florida during the Prohibition era, facing off against the competition and the Ku Klux Klan. Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Cooper also star.
Rings
Release date: 3 February 2017
The successful horror film franchise returns with a contemporary take on the cursed videotape. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…
