Last week, Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, Elysium, and Chappie (and a proud South African export), dropped Rakka, the first product from Oats Studios – a film project to create “experimental” shorts he otherwise couldn’t with Hollywood’s bureaucratic nonsense. Rakka has already racked up 2.5 million views on YouTube and has received a great response from fans.

The second film, entitled Firebase, has arrived on YouTube too, but instead of delving into another alien invasion scenario, Firebase jumps back in time to 1970s in the height of the Vietnam war, and throws some horrifying monsters in for good ‘Bloemkamp’ measure.

The South African director has a great knack for creating suspense and mystery around these sci-fi ideas, and we can’t wait to see more. If you’d like to support Oats Studios and what they’re doing, check out their official site.

In the meantime, check out Firebase, above. Keep in mind, there’s some graphic imagery in the short.
