A Look Back At Jordan Spieth As A 14-Year-Old

Following Jordan Spieth’s incredible Masters win over the weekend, Incubator Sports has taken a look back in time at the talented golfing star to see how his passion has evolved with hard work, dedication and desire.

Back in 2008, at just 14 years old, Jordan Spieth could hit a golf ball further than any other recreational golfer ever will and the youngster was also the top ranked golfer in his class.

“The scary part is, there’s more to come,” said Cameron McCormick back in 2008, Spieth’s instructor at the time. “You can see it when you watch him play golf. It’s still underrealised in terms of potential.”

Jordan and his instructor had been together for almost two years. During that time, his game improved dramatically.

“More than I really expected,” Spieth said of his improvements. “It’s really great to have someone like him to share all parts of my game and how I want to […] become better.”

“Someone said it to me the other day, junior golf development is a marathon, not a sprint,” said McCormick, who was the Brook Hollow Director of Instruction. “Whilst he’s ahead of the pack right now, we need to keep him there.”

When Channel 8 Sports talked to Spieth in back in ’08, he was a month away from the Junior British Open, a three-round tournament that features the best under-16 golfers in the world.

His game at the young age of 14 put him in the top two percent of all golfers. He was already playing from the back tees, averaging 4-under for a round.

In short, Spieth was the real deal at a young age.

“Based on previous benchmarks — Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, the great juniors that have gone before him — I think he can match up there with the greatest,” McCormick said.

“My ultimate goal when I came here, Cam asked me and I said that I want to win The Masters,” Spieth said.

Most golfers just want to go to The Masters. Very few actually think about winning it. And now Spieth has a green jacket.
