Currie Cup Round 5 Preview
Which teams have the edge this weekend?
Rugby fans are in for a treat with all three weekend Currie Cup games taking place on Saturday, and this round is set to be a cracker full of arch-rivals going head-to-head.
Cheetahs v Griquas
Saturday, 15:00
The midweek match on Wednesday saw a bit of an upset, with the Griquas toppling a strong Western Province side in Kimberly. But they’ll have their work cut out for them this week when they head to Bloemfontein to take on the Cheetahs, who are flying high with a three-match winning streak. Both teams have the fire-power to upset one another, but the Cheetahs home advantage and extra attacking flair should give them the edge in the encounter.
Prediction: Cheetahs by 7. Place your bets on the Cheetahs v Griquas match here.
Western Province v Blue Bulls
Saturday, 17:15
Province will be reeling from the defeat in the midweek, and it won’t get any easier with the Pretoria outfit (who also suffered a loss to the Sharks on Wednesday) heading to the Cape to give them a run. The Bulls are a side going through massive changes due to the arrival of coach John Mitchell, but there are visible improvements week-on-week. The Bulls do look to be a somewhat stronger side, but Western Province’s loss, home crowd, and star-power should deliver them a close win.
Prediction: Western Province by 3. Place your bets on the Western Province v Blue Bulls match here.
Golden Lions v Sharks
Saturday, 19:30
The Sharks produced a strong performance in Pretoria in the midweek, and face another welcomed challenge heading to Ellis Park this weekend. The Lions will be fresh for the encounter after they enjoyed a bye during the midweek games, and will also be a lot stronger having welcomed back a few Super Rugby players into their ranks – most notably powerful Rohan Janse van Rensburg back at centre. This should be the blockbuster of the weekend, which we believe the Lions will have enough experience to close.
Prediction: Lions by 10. Place your bets on the Golden Lions v Sharks match here.
