Sorry, Kolbe — THIS Was the Most Bizarre Conversion Moment in Rugby
Check out one of the best try-deniers of all time.
No one can dispute the incredible effort from Cheslin Kolbe during the quarter-final Rugby World Cup match against France where he managed to charge-down a conversion kick from Thomas Ramos.
The moment reminded rugby fans that you can in fact thwart a conversion attempt if you begin your charge-down from the tryline as the kicker begins his run-up.
Most defenders don’t bother, but this has been seen to happen a few times, often throwing the kicker off or getting a hand to the ball to skew it away; but former Ireland scrumhalf Peter Stringer has arguably the best conversion-denier of all time.
During the game between the Barbarians and Wallabies in 2011, James O’Connor was preparing for his conversion following a try in the corner, but lifted his foot to begin his run-up, which he then appeared to want to restart. Stringer spotted this, ran to the kicking tee and snatched the ball away, leaving O’Connor looking flummoxed.
Brilliant and cheeky. Check it out below:
